Empowerment, Equality and Engagement: Transforming Social Work’s Role in Disaster Management - A Seminar with Professor Vasilios Ioakimidis
In a world faced with a scale of unprecedented natural and man-made disasters, the role of social work in keeping communities safe during and after a disaster has never been more pronounced. Social Work ensures prompt and practical assistance to disaster victims and survivors, and reduces potential losses from hazards to achieve rapid and effective recovery.
This is a seminar with guest speaker Professor Vasilios Ioakimidis of the University of West Attica and the University of Essex, a renowned expert in Social Work and practice in the context of unpredictable and extraordinary environmental, political, social and economic change. It will be facilitated by Dr Panagiotis Pentaris and hosted by The Centre for Community Engagement Research in the Department of Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London.
Professor Vasilios Ioakimidis is a Professor of Historical and Comparative Social Work at the University of West Attica and is affiliated with the University of Essex and the University of Johannesburg. He is the Founding Professor of Social Work, founder and former Director of the Centre for Social Work. He has been working closely with social work educators and practitioners internationally, towards developing, updating and implementing the Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training in his capacity as the Chair of the Global Education Commission of the International Federation of Social Workers since 2017. He is also the co-editor of the British Journal of Social Work and a steering committee member of the Social Work Action Network (SWAN). Professor Ioakimidis’ research revolves around the broad theme of Social Work in Extremis, an exploration of social work practice in the context of unpredictable and extraordinary political, social, economic, and environmental change.
He is also the Director of The Centre for the Study of Social and Humanitarian Crises (CSSHC), the first academic centre in Greece, and one of the few globally, dedicated to interdisciplinary research, policy impact and teaching on Social and Humanitarian Crises (https://crises.uniwa.gr/en/home/).
