Cristina carries out research into embodied approaches to language learning and interculturality

Cristina Ros i Solé is a scholar in language education, intercultural studies and material cultures. Her research investigates the lived experience of multilingualism in today's transnational and global world and the challenges it presents for world-making, cultural identity, and belonging. Her work draws on post-humanism and new materialism theory, and uses ethnographic and post-qualitative methodologies.

Cristina has published widely in the areas of identity, the lived experience of multilingualism, and the student experience of globalisation in Higher Education. Her latest book 'Material Interculturality: making sense with everyday objects' (Routledge, 2024) looks at world-making with ordinary cultural artefacts. She is currently working on her latest edited book: 'Home-making and belonging in the internationalised campus' (with Bojana Petric and Prue Holmes).

She is Chair of the International Association of Languages and Intercultural Communication.

Research interests

Cristina's research looks at how languages and cultures are entangled with memory, feeling, history and place so that living multilingualism is seen as both a personal and a political experience.

Cristina's work is interdisciplinary and draws on a variety of disciplines such as Sociolinguistics, Anthropology, Film Studies and Material Culture. She is currently involved in two research collaborative projects:

(1) Home-making and Belonging in the Internationalised Campus. This project seeks to shift current market-driven and non-inclusive perspectives on the internationalisation of Higher Education (HE) by placing students' linguistic and intercultural encounters and their 'home-making' practices at the centre of their campus experience. It investigates students' intercultural sense of 'home' by juxtaposing feelings of being 'out of place' alongside processes of 'evoking home'.

(2) University Uniforms. This project looks at disruptive and materially-constructed understandings of global cultures and their transformation into individual identities and becomings.

Cristina has given numerous talks and is a regular reviewer for book series and Journals in Higher Education (e.g. London Review of Education), Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Communication and Language Education. She is on the Editorial Board of the Languages and Intercultural Communication Journal, Affiliated member of the International Centre for Intercultural Studies, and member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Language, Culture and Learning, Goldsmiths.
